Frequently Asked Questions
How does the interview-based process work?
For interview-based evaluations, we start by sitting down with the Chair and Company Secretary to understand more about you and your objectives for the board evaluation. We then review board and board committee papers. With that background information, we are ready to interview directors and executives and to observe meetings.
Based on the information from these discussions and observations, we draw up a draft report which is discussed with the Chair. After this the full, final report is discussed with the Board.
How does the external questionnaire-based process work?
Questionnaire-based externally-facilitated evaluation gives board members and stakeholders access to expert questionnaires. We agree the questionnaire with you, give respondents online access and run the whole process.
We do the expert analysis and draft a report on the basis of the findings and discuss it with the Chair. The final report is then discussed with the Board.
How does the Board Evaluation Software work?
Our board evaluation software can be used immediately upon sign-up. You take out a subscription to use the software: it’s a fixed fee to cover all respondents to the questionnaire. We give you some quick training – it’s easy to use. Then you are ready to go.
You use our ready-to-go questionnaires, perhaps making a few changes if you have some specific characteristics. Respondents receive a secure login by automated email to complete questionnaires online.
You then have access to the results in automated overview reports with ready-to-use graphics and a base report in Word. And you can drill down into the scores and comments online.
What is the timeframe for the different evaluation types?
Our fullest board effectiveness review is our interview-based evaluation. The timeframe for this will depend on the scope of the project and the availability of the people we need to meet. In general, it is a 6 – 8-week process from start to finish.
Our questionnaire-based evaluation uses Thinking Board® questionnaires where participants conduct self-assessments. This is a 6-week process.
Our board evaluation software offers instant access upon sign-up and you have access to the portal for the duration of your subscription with no time limits.
How much does it cost?
The payment structure depends on a number of factors including the type of board review and the scope of the project.
The interview-based review is the most comprehensive and resource-intensive, making it a premium offering. The fee is time-based so depends on the number of interviews and the meetings to be observed. We will agree a fixed fee with you upfront and this will not change during the project. If the scope changes, we agree with you the new parameters and pricing.
Cost-wise, the interview-based board evaluation is followed by the externally-facilitated questionnaire-based evaluation. That is generally a standard fee. But it does depend to a degree on the number of respondents and committees as the facilitation component of the fee is time-based.
Our board evaluation software is the lowest-priced option – but it is not externally-facilitated in any way. It is a fixed subscription fee. This covers all use of the software by all respondents as well as the initial training. If you require additional administrative support, this can be provided at an additional charge.
Can we put in place a three-year cycle?
We can help you structure an approach that covers the three years between your external reviews. Typically that involves using our online self-assessment service Thinking Board® to do a follow up on the development points from your previous review.
Or you might choose to do an in-depth review of one or more committees – either interview-based or questionnaire-based using our expert questionnaires.
Or possibly a more detailed review of different aspects of your Board’s work – maybe “risk governance” or “dynamics” for example.
