Interview-Based External Board Evaluations
Our interview-based board effectiveness reviews recognise the particular governance challenges facing public sector bodies, and we have worked with a range of arm’s length bodies, regulators and “GovCos”.
They value our ability to look at their specific responsibilities and context, while helping them to comply, where applicable, with the UK Code of Corporate Governance and Cabinet Office Governance Code.
Interviews with executive and non-executive members cover the role of the Board, with a strong focus on how the Board oversees public money, assures itself on financial controls, sets the strategy and holds executives to account.
By reviewing board papers, we’re able to see how information is communicated to the Board. And we observe board and committee meetings to see how they work in action.
We look at the people issues around culture, remuneration and appointments. And we often speak to stakeholders both at UKGI and policy-holding departments such as the DWP, DFID, HMT and BEIS. This gives three views on the Board: how it sees itself, the value it gives to the executive team and the perceptions of stakeholders.
Bringing these angles together, we help directors to gain a comprehensive understanding of the Board’s strengths and the ways it can develop further.
Questionnaire-Based External Board Evaluations
Some externally-facilitated board effectiveness reviews are best handled by using a questionnaire to gather opinions. Our approach helps directors to engage with the questionnaire, leaving comments and explanations of their views.
Thinking Board®, our online tool, provides you with a range of tailored questionnaires. We help you customise the questionnaire – if needed – to your own specific circumstances. You’ll receive a clear report, drawing out suggestions based on what works well elsewhere – both in the public and private sector.
The success of any board depends on common factors:
- Is there a balanced and diverse group of directors with the right skills?
- Are meetings well run?
- Are board papers well written with the key points summarised?
- Does the Chair lead the Board well?
We’ll lead a discussion on the findings and possible actions for the whole Board. For a more thorough review, you can also include board observation and a review of the board papers as part of a questionnaire-based evaluation.
Board Evaluation Software
You can use our board self-assessment questionnaires for your internal board reviews. They are easy to use, and respondents can fill them in online. Our self-assessment questionnaires get quickly to the heart of governance issues and they’re engaging to fill in.
Structured to help you identify areas for improvement and root causes, you can tailor them to your own needs. Automated reporting allows you to draw out the emerging themes, identifying any divergence of opinions, such as between trustees and executives.
Simply export the charts to Word to build a board paper which gives trustees the reporting they need to have a good debate about how to make the Board better.
Our Credentials among Regulators and Public Sector Bodies

Regulators we work with are the Financial Conduct Authority, the Payment Systems Regulator, the Financial Reporting Council and the Pensions Regulator.
Other public-sector clients include CDC, the Pension Protection Fund, the Financial Ombudsman and the Bank of England.
